Tuesday Roundup for 03/30/2010 XL edition!
Well, here's a couple week's worth of stuff, I'll keep this intro short so you can get to the content.
This week's featured blog is Boing Boing. They're part of the idea that started this iteration of notoften (it used to be a site for my music). They have an army of people who blog daily, nay, hourly to keep the masses informed and entertained. There's something for everyone there, from products based on bananas to discussions on copyright to interesting books based on blogs. One prominent blogger is Cory Doctorow, that guy mentioned in the comic xkcd, writer, copyfighter, etc. Anyway, on to what I found interesting from them.
- A sampling of letters written by an adult posing as a child asking real questions about life has been compiled into a book
- There was a post about pulling a tablecloth off a table, so this video was posted as a response, putting the tablecloth back on
- If you aren't getting enough math, I've got some for you. Most people don't realize that nature shows the Fibonacci sequence so often because the sequence defines biology
- Deep in the Hundred Acre wood, no one can hear you scream...
- Oh boy is this animation hypnotic...
- See if you can spot the punchline here...
- Dog bites cop car
- I with more movie cliches would come to life like this.
- This looks like a crazy awesome movie idea (I don't care if it's been done before) but I'm also curious about that TV shown at the end, does anyone have info on it?
- I like watches and clocks, but please don't get this one for me, I don't much enjoy dino poop.
- And to think, I used to eat happy meals...
- I also really enjoy food and interesting restaurant ideas. I haven't mentioned them before, but I saw one from Make: Online that was based on the website Instructables, and there was a previous Boing Boing post on a restaurant that featured eating in the dark. This week's find is a restaurant that serves WWII style meals to take you back in time.
- A clever piece on the print media (please watch the whole thing, it's all of two minutes long).
- I still don't understand how records work. How can one groove sound different from another groove that looks exactly the same? Where does the difference come from?
- Chatroulette is everywhere, and there was a guy who got on and played piano and sang about the people on the other end. Ben folds saw this and did it at a concert.
- Speaking of memes, here's the end of that Trololo thing: Trololo guy watches Trololo parodies.
From Skepchick:
- When ignorance and hate reign, level heads will prevail, and I think they did an awesome job (or, how to deal with intolerant idiots).
From Richard Wiseman's Blog:
- A series of un-'shopped pictures that were taken at just the right angle at just the right time.
From Cake Wrecks:
- The chocolate cake demons will get you! And they'll be delicious while they do it.
From Make Online:
- Does it count as recursive when an already existing kid's toy makes a variation on another already existing kid's toy?
- A mouse trap that's not only humane (like sticking a bit of peanut butter on the end of a paper towel tube and sticking it at the end of a table over a garbage can) but it's also printable, if you have a 3D printer.
- I really like stairs that have a turn in them, and this railing would really make it even more appealing.
- A tablecloth that is meant to be spilled upon.
- This fork-man just looks so helpful, and so happy to be holding up your phone.
- From the "Doesn't do what it should" department, a pendulum that goes in circles and can draw squares, or faces.
- April Fool's Day is this week, here's a hardware hack that's got nasty results.
From Dude Craft:
- I'd link to the original, but it's in Franch or something. The idea is great and simple, cut holes in books to plant things. It kind of reminds me of reusing old thrift store paintings and adding to them (from Make in a previous roundup).
- The world's largest house of cards with no glue, and it's a replica of some building I don't know the building it's in!
- I'm starting to lose my hair, and this guy figured out a solution, show it off! I especially like the New Year's Eve one and the one with the crystals, he looks like Sisqo.
From How Stuff Works:
- First of all, Marshal Brain posts way too much. However, he has unique insight and I wish I had the time to post as often and as interesting material as he does. He did a few week's worth of explaining magic tricks.
- Here's a video he thought was funny about how people make profile pictures to use in sites like MySpace.
- I want an aquarium filled with robot fish.
- Soda (not pop) bottle design that saves space and $$.
- A post about enhancing images, both fictionally and in real life.
- There's also a new content aware fill coming to Photoshop that uses maths to guess at how to erase things (the video's kinda long but it's interesting to watch it work).
From Mighty Optical Illusions:
- I really like taking a concept and flipping it. I made an art sculpture once that took a warped statue in front of a crazy mirror that made it look normal. This is the same idea by taking something in real life and making it look like a painting. If you just look at the third picture (aside from the camera hanging around his neck) it looks exactly like a painting.
From Slashdot:
- My 360 died recently and I'm looking for different ways to memorialize it. I'm thinking putting the faceplate on a plaque, but this coffin isn't a bad idea either.
From The Onion:
- I'd like to think I was part of history by helping the music industry make money last year.
- March was Women's history month, did you remember?
From There I Fixed It:
- I really wouldn't mind if I received a birthday present wrapped like this (P.S. my birthday is coming up soon!).
From Dealnews:
- Lego Taj Mahal. That's all I have to say about that.
From Irregular Webcomic:
- Schroedinger's cat jokes are always funny.
- The Grandfather Paradox presented with a new twist (I guess their family tree would be a moebius strip or this bagel from Make).
From This Is Why You're Fat:
- Baconmug.
- Baconroses (I know what I'm doing for my wife for Valentine's day next year).
PHEW! Well kids, it's time for bed and we'll see you next week with a more regular roundup (I still don't know what day these are going to be posted). The podcast is still in production, but spring break starts this week for me so I'll be able to work on it when I'm not at work doing OT. See you next Tuesday!
Tuesday Roundup for 03/09/2010
Cue the dramatic music, it's time for the Tuesday roundup! Let's jump right in!
Today's featured blog is Dude Craft. It's a collection of "manly" craft projects, such as turning a garage into a swimming pool, crocheting on a gigantic scale, stacking books, or making vehicles. They post relatively frequently and I am rarely disappointed in their content. Some of their posts overlap Make Online and Boing Boing, but it's really hard to tell which comes first. This week's featured post from Dude Craft is a crazy mini golf course that can actually be called art.
From Boing Boing:
- This one is actually a touching video about technology and how it can help people connect after such a long time.
- Kurt Cobain, we miss thee, and we shall pay tribute to thee... ON ICE!
- Clocks fascinate me, watches even more so. (under the "previously" tag there's a crazy watch that I found a video about)
- A short (and to the point) animation talking about religion (or lack thereof)
- I wish I could comment on this but the author already does a good enough job of describing everything so I need to say nothing (this is the longest description, btw)
- Does anyone remember the Animaniacs version of this?
- I saw Body Worlds when it came to a local museum, it was pretty schweet but was definitely lacking in squid.
- Do humming birds and praying manti have the same food source or something? There are a lot of related videos for this one.
- I've shared this before, but not on here, and science is cool (also some related videos lead to perpetual motion magnet vids, read the comments on those).
- I saw this posted around the blogosphere and I do so enjoy organizational tools. It's just so simple and elegant.
From Mighty Optical Illusions:
- Reverse perspective techniques, who would have thought?
From Make Online:
- The same thing on reverse perspective, but from a different angle... (man I'm clever)
- A light that I would totally want to eat.
- I love crazy art projects that really make you think, like this one about cameras.
- Here we have another awesome clock, this one made from a hard drive.
- I first screamed "nerd" when I saw this room, but I really like the idea of hiding light and fog controls at the DM's chair.
- I wish I had the time to do music projects like these...
- Again, I think I shared something like this before, but I still think it's a great idea, makes me want to run out to the SalVal right now...
- Mario, recreated in an array of only 64 single color leds, I can totally still see it, though.
From LifeHacker:
- I totally participated in NPW by not getting that podcast done yet!
- If I only had the square footage for a room like this...
From Richard Wiseman's Blog:
- Great video on a common optical illusion.
From Dealnews:
- My birthday is only a few months away, and I just really like things that are backwards.
From Questionable Content:
- I've bet this will be a huge problem with the iPad.
From ChannelAte:
- A guest comic that was just really funny, caught me off guard.
Well, that's it for this week's roundup, hopefully we'll have that podcast sometime before the end of the... year?
See you next Tuesday!
Tuesday Roundup for 03/02/2010
Good morning, or afternoon, all. I'm doing this earlier from now on, going with a Tuesday roundup instead of Wednesday. The podcast is coming along nicely (really!) and should be released later this week, unless I have to record Friday, but we'll see after tonight. Plenty of items for you in the roundup this week, even though it was only 6 days, so get your pants back on, it's roundup time!
This week's featured blog is Something Awful. This is a perverted, disgusting website that no one should look at. However, if you accidentally do look at this website, I highly recommend checking out the Comedy Goldmine (interesting forum posts) and Photoshop Phriday (photoshop contests) posts, possibly Video Game Article (the one sentence reviews are pretty good). Each piece of the website has its own style of posts that are really funny, and with so many people and so many topics, they are constantly posting and with enough content there will always be something entertaining. Today's offering from somethingawful is from their "Horrors of Pornography" section (NSFW!). To keep with current events, the theme of this porn video is curling, like the Olympic sport. The video clip on the page, though it contains no nudity, is not safe for work, please don't get fired because of me. Anyway, this just goes to show you how bizarre the world is when it comes to porn.
From Failblog: This is definitely my favorite spelling mistake so far, and it even uses my favorite curse word! (I guess it's NSFW for language)
From This is Why You're Fat: I've always thought making food look like other food was a lot of fun, apparently someone else had that same idea, though it might take a second glance to realize what's going on there.
From ChannelAte: There are so many webcomics out there, so I'll try to post some of the more obscure ones here, as long as they're funny. That is, until I start making my own which should be soon after the first podcast... Anyway, this was hilarious, and if you laugh, you're a sexist pig.
From A Softer World: This comic has alt-text if you mouse over it, and it's also a great solution to some pesky astronomical problems, too.
From Cyanide & Happiness: Don't watch this video first. The credits for it are awesome, but for context, you should watch this one first. The comics over at C&H are also pretty good, but more often than not they're highly offensive.
From Dealnews: I'm not going to post things from dealnews on here often, but they're a great site and if you're in the market to buy anything (expensive or not) I highly recommend checking their site to see if it's on sale somewhere. Also, their posts can be funny sometimes (they had an old one about the space shuttle for sale) and this week had some good offerings including cuff-links and transportation.
From Bad Astronomy: Phil Plait's niece is weird and I wish I could grow a mustache to help with her cause. I also would love to see an eclipse from a jet.
From How Stuff Works: Math is awesome, and I loves me the explanation for how to cut pizza. Also, the laser cutting video is pretty sweet.
From Dudecraft: Who doesn't love the wacky antics of Lady Gaga?
From Make Online: I would love one of these trees in the house somewhere, or maybe "planted" outside would look awesome. What won't college professors do to try to shock their students? A great snow sculpture/pun that actually made me CQTM (chuckle quietly to myself). Watch near the middle of this video for the plasma arcing. Also, my birthday is coming up soon, anyone wanna buy me a guitar?
From Boing Boing: It would be nice to get this kind of affirmation from more appliances. In case this poll closes, here are all the titles: "The Changing World of Inflammatory Bowel Disease," "Collectible Spoons of the 3rd Reich," "Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes," "Governing Lethal Behavior in Autonomous Robots," "What Kind of Bean is this Chihuahua?," "Afterthoughts of a Worm Hunter." I would just link to the video, but the explanation helps. Juggalos, need I say more? I always thought defacing money was a crime, but these people do a great job at it (there are a few links from there to great galleries). I'm not sure how the hour would change (it would require both sides to lose at the same time) but I do love the idea of this clock. Why are there so many posts about bananas? I know this is buddingmonkey's territory, but I found some info on Portal that I couldn't not pass on to you guys. There's always another side to an article and in this case, they neglect to mention that shorter days means more of 'em. I just saw this before posting and had to link to it, I think science and math need to not take themselves as seriously and this would be a great way to show the world that they're not as uptight as people think.
That's all, see you next Tuesday!
